The Last Command
Award-winning organist and improviser, Peter Edwin Krasinski will present The Last Command, a silent romantic drama directed by Josef von Sternberg and written by John F. Goodrich and Herman J. Mankiewicz from a story by Lajos Biró. The film stars Emil Jannings, who won the first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 1929 ceremony for his performance in this film and The Way of All Flesh, the only year multiple roles were considered. Evelyn Brent and William Powell co-star.
The film’s plot, a dramatic story of love and heroism set in Hollywood and in Czarist Russia, is based on a real ex-general in the Imperial Russian Army, and his story following the Russian Revolution. Filmmaker Preston Stuges declared this film ‘the only perfect picture’ he had ever seen. It was rated four out of four stars.
Organist Peter Krasinski is known internationally for his original accompaniments to silent films. He has performed repeatedly on the Johnson & Son organ at the Stone Church Cultural Center since its re-opening to the public in 2017, always to rave reviews by appreciative audiences. He has generously conducted community outreach to Quabbin Regional school students. An acclaimed organist and educator, Krasinski recently added membership in the Screen Actors’ Guild to his resume for his cameo appearance as a choral director in Oscar-winning film The Leftovers.
